The Senate on Tuesday passed a bill seeking to provide a legal framework for the Yusuf Maitama Sule Federal University of Education, Kano, in North-West Nigeria.

The passage of the bill was contained in a statement made available to the Voice of Nigeria by the Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Deputy President of the Senate, Ismail Mudashir.

According to the statement, the bill, which was sponsored by the Deputy President of the Senate, Senator Barau Jibrin (APC, Kano North), was passed during a plenary presided over by the President of the Senate, Senator Godswill Akpabio.

The bill seeks to provide the statutory foundation for the effective management and administration of the institution.

The statement recalled that President Bola Ahmed Tinubu had in September 2024 approved the conversion of the Federal Colleges of Education in Kano and Zaria into Federal Universities of Education.

It added that following a request by Senator Barau, President Tinubu on May 10, 2025, approved the renaming of the Kano institution after the late statesman, Yusuf Maitama Sule.

Mudashir quoted Senator Barau as saying the legislation was necessary to give legal backing to the institution and to provide comprehensive provisions for the promotion and development of teacher education.

He said Senate President Akpabio commended Senator Barau for sponsoring the bill and expressed optimism that President Tinubu would assent to it upon transmission.
