The Super Eagles of Nigeria started their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifying campaign with a 2-1 comeback victory against Madagascar, at the Godswill Akpabio International Stadium in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria.
Nigeria will be without the services of talisman Victor Osimhen for the opening qualifiers, after the striker was ruled out with injury. In the starting line-up was, George Ilenikhena, making his debut for the Super Eagles.
Backed by an expectant home crowd, Nigeria dominated early possession, probing for openings in Madagascar’s well-organised low block.
However, Madagascar struck first after capitalising on a quick transition, with Ehsan Kari beating goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali in the 15th minute as the goal silenced the home fans.
The Super Eagles looked for a way back into the encounter and were rewarded just before half-time.
Debutant George Ilenikhena scored in the first minute of added time to restore parity, marking his senior Super Eagles debut with a goal.
The equaliser sent the teams into the break level at 1-1.
After the restart, Nigeria increased the pressure, with captain Wilfred Ndidi and Alex Iwobi helping the hosts dominate proceedings in midfield.
The sustained pressure eventually paid off as Moses Usor found the decisive goal in the second half to complete Nigeria’s comeback and give the Super Eagles all three points.
Usor dribbled past two players in style, finishing brilliantly at the near post to beat the goalkeeper from a distance.
The result gives Eric Chelle’s side a winning start to their Group L campaign. Nigeria sits second in Group L with three points, the same as leaders Guinea-Bissau, who are ahead on goal difference.
Securing maximum points and a clean sheet on Match Day 1 provides an ideal psychological boost for the squad as they navigate the rigorous qualification pathway. Managerial adjustments and disciplined defensive organisation ensured that the visitors had no answers to Nigeria’s overall dominance.
With the first hurdle cleared with utmost professionalism, the Super Eagles turn their attention to the upcoming fixtures, aiming to build on this solid foundation and cement their status as frontrunners in the group.
Nigeria will next travel to face Guinea-Bissau September 29th, while Madagascar will host Tanzania on the same day. Tanzania and Madagascar are currently without a point.
