TCN Commissions Four Substations in Kano

Chioma Eche, Abuja

The Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), in partnership with the Kano State Government, has commissioned four transmission substations, with 544 megawatts of electricity wheeling capacity to Kano State and the national grid.

The Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Minister of Power, Adeola Labzy stated this in a statement, noting that the projects would strengthen bulk electricity supply to Kano’s industrial, commercial and residential areas.

The substations, located at Walalambe, Kumbotso, Dakata and Dan-Agundi, are expected to relieve overloaded substations and create additional capacity to meet previously suppressed electricity demand.

Walalambe has gained a new 80-megawatt capacity substation supported by two 40 MVA transformers, while Kumbotso has received additional transmission infrastructure at the 330-kilovolt level, including 100 MVA transformers. Dakata and Dan-Agundi have also gained additional 100 MVA transformers each at the 132-kilovolt level.

According to the statement, the Walalambe substation has six outgoing feeders serving the Tokarawa Industrial Area, Eastern Bypass, Maiduguri Road, Hadejia Road and adjoining communities.

The statement further explained that Lee Group, a major industrial enterprise, has reconnected to the national grid after more than 30 years of operating off-grid.

It said that the fire-damaged Dan-Agundi substation had regained substantial capacity to supply electricity to Kano’s ancient town, the Emir’s Palace and surrounding communities.

The Ministry said the investments would strengthen manufacturing, support small businesses, promote employment generation and improve household welfare across the state.

It described the projects as part of President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and his commitment to repositioning the power sector as a foundation for national development and economic growth.
