Ukraine President Awards US First Lady State Honour

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy has awarded US First Lady Melania Trump a state honour for her role in organising the evacuation of civilians from a frontline town last week.

The award was announced in a presidential decree published on Wednesday.

The decree, dated November 2, cited her “significant personal contribution” to humanitarian support for Ukraine and her efforts to assist Ukrainian children, including those deported or forcibly transferred from Russian-occupied territories.

The Order of Princess Olga, First Class, recognises women for exceptional contributions in fields including science, education, culture and charitable work.

Ukrainian officials said Melania Trump played a key role in organising a six-day ceasefire that allowed civilians to be evacuated from the Russian-occupied southern Ukrainian town of Oleshky.

The evacuation operation ended on Sunday, marking the longest local pause in fighting since Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Melania Trump said nearly 800 people were evacuated during the operation.
