The United Nations, UN’s biodiversity Chief has warned that companies and financial institutions are moving too slowly to address nature loss, despite the growing risks it poses to profits, supply chains and economic growth.
Executive Secretary Astrid Schomaker said many firms remain “on the sidelines” and are failing to properly assess biodiversity risks across their operations.
Schomaker also noted that more money continues to flow into activities that harm nature than into conservation, describing the shift of private investment toward nature-positive projects as the “biggest challenge.”
The warning comes ahead of COP17 biodiversity talks in Armenia, where countries will review progress on the 2022 global biodiversity framework, including efforts to mobilise $200 billion annually for nature protection and expand the Cali Fund to finance conservation.
