The UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Volker Turk, has warned that advanced artificial intelligence could pose an existential risk to humanity.
Turk issued the warning on Monday in Geneva, calling for stronger safeguards to ensure the safety and security of AI systems.
He stressed that countries hosting AI firms, as well as those involved in their supply chains, should agree on clear limits to prevent potential harm.

According to his office, failures involving powerful AI systems could disrupt critical infrastructure, communications and democratic institutions.
Turk also expressed concern that AI capabilities were advancing faster than existing safeguards, citing reported incidents involving autonomous AI agents.
The UN rights chief called for an urgent international effort to strengthen AI safety before the risks became difficult to control.
