A senior adviser to U.S. President Donald Trump has attended an event in Egypt alongside Sudan’s Army Chief, Gen. Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, amid efforts to find a political solution to Sudan’s ongoing war.
US Senior Adviser for Arab and African Affairs, Massad Boulos, said he attended a lunch hosted by Egyptian President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi, where Burhan was also present.
Boulos said; “the United States, Egypt and other regional and international partners had reaffirmed efforts to advance a political solution to the Sudan crisis.”
However, a senior official in Sudan’s military-led government said Burhan and Boulos only had a “You encounter” and did not hold formal talks.
The meeting comes less than two weeks after the United States reportedly withheld a visa for Burhan ahead of a scheduled appearance at the United Nations.
Sudan’s army has been fighting the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces, RSF, since April 2023, after disagreements over the integration of the two forces as part of a planned transition to civilian rule.
The conflict has displaced more than 14 million people and triggered widespread violence and a severe humanitarian crisis.
The United States has accused the RSF of genocide and the Sudanese army of war crimes, allegations both sides have denied.
Boulos said Washington was ready to support efforts towards comprehensive dialogue among Sudanese political forces and a roadmap for the country’s future.
