The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that the territory’s Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) has increased from about ₦9 billion to more than ₦40 billion monthly since he assumed office, attributing the growth to reforms introduced by his administration.
Wike made the disclosure on Thursday in Abuja during an interview with journalists.
He said the significant increase in revenue was driven by deliberate efforts to block leakages and strengthen the collection of land-related revenues, including ground rents and fees for Certificates of Occupancy (C of O).
According to the minister, the improved revenue has enabled the FCT Administration to finance critical infrastructure projects and improve service delivery across the nation’s capital.
“When we came on board, our IGR was a mere ₦9 billion a month, but as I speak to you today, we’ve been able to improve it to over ₦40 billion. So when people say, ‘The FCT is working,’ it is because deliberate efforts have been made to make it work,” Wike said.
He stressed that the increase in internally generated revenue did not occur by chance but was the result of policy reforms and administrative measures implemented since he assumed office.
The minister noted that the improved revenue base has provided the resources required to fund ongoing development projects across the Federal Capital Territory.
Wike also emphasised that effective leadership, accountability and prudent management of public resources remain essential to delivering sustainable development and good governance.
He added that the progress recorded by the FCT Administration demonstrates what can be achieved through focused leadership and sustained efforts to improve public sector performance.
