2023 Elections; Lagos Deputy Governor Charges Students To Elect Leaders With Proven Records

The Deputy Governor of Lagos state, Dr Obafemi Hamzat has enjoined students in Lagos state to be proactive by electing leaders based on proven records in the next elections.

Dr Obafemi Hamzat made this call while addressing Muslim students at the formal closing Ceremony of the 113th Islamic Vacation Course (IVC) in Epe area of Lagos.

He said ” the future belongs to the youths, whether we like it or not. Our generation will soon leave, it is their country, they must participate in the elections that is why they should ask the right questions because 2023 is about capability and ability to achieve their goals and who are the people that can do it for them based on proven records “

IVC is a statutory annual Islamic training and camping program organised by the Muslim students Society of Nigeria (MSSN), Lagos State Area Unit.

Impactful Program

Commenting on the week-long vacation course, the Deputy Governor, expressed satisfaction with the level of organisation from the leadership of MSSNLagos by gathering students within and outside the state for such an impactful program against immortality and vices in the Society.

He promised to support the organisation in their upcoming camp in 2023.

The Amir (President), Lagos state Area Unit of the Muslim students’ Society of Nigeria ( MSSN) Mallam Miftaudeen Thanni urged stakeholders to tackle prevalent challenges in Nigeria in order that equal right and peaceful coexistence prevail in the Society.

According to the Students leader, “Islam and Humanity” was chosen as the theme of the week-long camping programme to reflect on how Islam and Muslims could be saviours to the myriads of problems facing humanity.

“From abduction to corruption, to political assassinations, to kidnappings, to religious bigotry and several disturbing challenges bedevilling our nation and which are weakening our patriotism, the time cannot be riper to discuss this theme – Islam and Humanity. We urge all that are concerned to stand up to these challenges to give us a society where equal rights and peaceful coexistence prevail.” he said.

Amir Thanni commended the Lagos State Government for issuing a circular to cement the implementation of the Supreme Court Judgement granting the use of hijab for muslim female students in Lagos schools, stating that the act would deepen constitutionalism.

Imbibe The Teachings

With few months into the 2023 general elections, he appealed to the Students to imbibe the teachings of Islam as they carry out their civic responsibilities.

We should at no point get involved in violence, ballot-snatching, vote-buying, and other related vices. Allah is the best decider of our affairs and he knows better what is unknown to mankind,”
he stated.

Over 10 thousand youths physically and virtually benefited from the week-long 113th IVC programs which ran from December 22nd , 2022 to January 1st 2023 at the Human Capital Development Center ( HCDC) , Epe for secondary students, Undergaduates and school leavers across all 20 Local Government and 37 Local Ccouncil Development Areas in Lagos state.

Other notable dignitaries that honoured the ceremony included, National President of MSSN, Sheu Usman Abubakar, Hon. Abiodun Tobun, lawmakers in the state, prominent clerics and other notable personalities in the state.
