2027: Kano Governor Advocates North-South Power Rotation

By Salihu Ali, Kano

Kano State Governor in North West Nigeria, Abba Kabir Yusuf, has advocated continued rotation of the Nigerian presidency between the northern and southern regions of the country.

Governor Yusuf made the call at the Kano Government House while unveiling 50 vehicles donated by Chief Oweizide Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, to support the All Progressives Congress (APC) grassroots mobilisation ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The governor said the principle of rotational presidency would promote fairness and ensure that different regions have the opportunity to lead the country.

He proposed that presidential power should alternate between the North and South, with each region allowed to complete two consecutive four-year terms before power shifts to the other.

According to him, giving an administration sufficient time in office would enable it to implement its policies, programmes and development projects effectively.

Governor Yusuf consequently appealed to Nigerians, particularly political stakeholders in the North, to support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for a second term, saying this would allow the South to complete its two-term cycle before power returns to the North.

He said the current political arrangement should be allowed to run its course, with the expectation that presidential power would return to the North after the completion of the southern region’s two-term tenure in 2031.

The governor maintained that rotational presidency could strengthen national unity, mutual trust, fairness and the sense of belonging among Nigerians across the country’s regions.

In the 2027 general elections, Governor Yusuf urged political parties and their supporters to embrace peaceful and issue-based campaigns.

He advised politicians to focus their campaigns on policies, programmes and development plans rather than personal attacks, inflammatory statements and actions capable of threatening peace and stability.

Governor Yusuf also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to peaceful democratic engagement, urging political stakeholders to place the unity, peace and development of Kano State and Nigeria above partisan interests.
