The International Republican Institute (IRI) Pre-Election Assessment Mission for the 2027 general elections has commenced engagements with key stakeholders in Nigeria to assess the political environment and preparations ahead of the polls.
Speaking during a meeting with the leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) at its national headquarters in Abuja, the IRI African Regional Director, Jenai Cox, stated that the mission was in Nigeria to gather insights from political parties and other stakeholders on the pre-election period.
Cox said the team would assess the level of preparations for the elections, the activities of political parties and issues that could shape the electoral environment as the country moves closer to the January 2027 polls.
She added that the mission would share its recommendations with stakeholders at the end of its engagements, alongside a preliminary statement on its findings.

Responding, the National Chairman of the Wike-backed PDP, Mohammed Abdulrahman, welcomed the delegation and expressed appreciation for the mission’s interest in Nigeria’s electoral process. He said the party was committed to democratic principles and remained prepared for the 2027 general election.
The chairman also referenced the recent Osun governorship election, noting that voters turned out in large numbers to exercise their franchise s, stating that the PDP remained a party of the people.
He assured the delegation that the party would provide more details of its preparations and a template for the 2027 elections during the engagement.
Other members include IRI President, Dr Daniel Twining; African Regional Director, Jenai Cox; and West African Regional Programme Director, Sentell Barnes.
