UNICEF tasks Kano Government on social policies, programmes

United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund UNICEF has urged the Kano State Government to continue to sustain the various social policy, and programmes put in place to enhance the well-being of children and women.

This was contained as part of a communique issued at the end of a one day Partnership and Network Strengthening Meeting with Kano media held in Kano state north Western Nigeria.

UNICEF expressed delight in Kano State Executive Council and other stakeholders involved in the domestication of the CHILD Right Act, for measures being taken to pass the Act

The agency also demanded that policy makers, and other stakeholders, close gap  in order to tackle the prevalence of children dying due to Preventable Diseases, and incidence of Out of School Children, such as Almajiri, Street Hawking, Child Scavengers, Child Labour, and Trafficking in Children, through ” designing constructive, and adequate social policies, to address the challenges.”

UNICEF expressed commitment to continue to partner with relevant stakeholders, such as the Media, and others, in order to achieve set objectives, in its area of programmatic priroties.

It also implored Journalists to sustain their role as Gate –Keepers, and the culture of Accurate, Fair, and Responsible Journalism, in the face of growing encroachment of the media space by social media.

In the same vein, the United Nations International Children’s Emergency Fund, UNICEF decried the rampant cases of kidnap of children in northern Nigeria.

It called on government at all levels to “urgently put in place an enhanced and adequate protection of children in schools and other public places.”
