In a significant stride towards sustainable development, Sintali and the Green Building Council Nigeria (GBCN) have signed a strategic Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to accelerate the adoption of EDGE (Excellence in Design for Greater Efficiencies) green building certification across Nigeria.

The partnership, unveiled simultaneously in Abuja and London on 9 June 2025, is set to transform Nigeria’s built environment by promoting sustainable practices in construction and development. EDGE, an innovation of the International Finance Corporation (IFC), is a global green building standard that provides a measurable and affordable way to design resource-efficient buildings—cutting down on energy, water, and embodied energy in materials by at least 20%.

This new alliance brings together Sintali, a global certification provider for EDGE, and GBCN, Nigeria’s foremost green building advocacy group. The collaboration formalises a non-exclusive working relationship that seeks to drive awareness, capacity building, and market penetration for EDGE in Nigeria’s rapidly urbanising regions.

Under the agreement, both organisations will launch joint awareness campaigns, capacity-building workshops, and mentorship initiatives aimed at empowering professionals and developers with the skills and tools to implement green building principles. The ultimate goal is to support Nigeria’s transition towards a low-carbon economy and meet national and international climate targets.

Speaking on the partnership, Eleni Polychroniadou, Co-Founder of Sintali, expressed optimism about Nigeria’s potential:
“We are excited to partner with the Green Building Council Nigeria to advance green construction across the country. Nigeria holds tremendous potential to lead in sustainable development, and by equipping the market with the right tools and knowledge, we can support a rapid and inclusive transition to net zero.”

Echoing the sentiment, Danjuma Waniko, President of GBCN, noted:
“This partnership marks an important milestone in our mission to transform Nigeria’s building market and empower professionals and developers to embrace green building at scale. By combining Sintali’s global certification expertise with our local insights, we’re making EDGE certification more accessible, practical, and impactful.”
