The Enugu Metropolitan Lions Club has taken its humanitarian service to the Spinal Cord Injury Ward of the National Orthopedic Hospital, Enugu, donating relief materials and offering encouragement to patients as part of activities to mark World Spinal Cord Day.

President of the Club, Lion Chibota Edozie, who once received treatment in the ward, urged patients to remain resilient and avoid self-pity.

She noted that depression could worsen their condition, stressing that “hope and courage are vital for recovery.”

Drawing from her personal journey as a former patient, Edozie’s testimony inspired many in the ward, who described her visit as a source of renewed strength.

The donation, which included toiletries, surgical gloves, detergents, and cartons of toothpaste, was received with joy by the patients.

Immediate past President of the Club, Lion Emma Agbo, commended the hospital management for its commitment to patient care, describing the Enugu Orthopedic Hospital in the Southeast, as one of the leading facilities of its kind in Nigeria.

The exercise brought smiles to the faces of the patients and reinforced the Lions Club’s mission of service to vulnerable groups.

Through fundraising, community outreach, and direct interventions such as the Enugu donation, the Lions Clubs International continues to embody the spirit of service and compassion across the globe.

The initiative reflects the broader mission of Lions Clubs International, a global service organisation founded in 1917 by Melvin Jones in Chicago, United States. Today, it is one of the world’s largest volunteer movements, bringing together over 1.4 million members across more than 200 countries.

Its mission is to empower volunteers to serve their communities, meet humanitarian needs, and promote peace and understanding worldwide.
