The leadership of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has called on its members, particularly those serving on various committees for the forthcoming Ibadan National Convention, to show dedication and bring their expertise to bear to ensure a hitch-free and successful event scheduled for November 15–16.
Speaking at the inaugural meeting of the Security and Intelligence Subcommittee in Abuja, the Vice Chairman of the Subcommittee, Col. Austin Akobundu (rtd), who represented the Committee Chairman and Governor of Taraba State, Agbu Kefas, commended members for their commitment and willingness to serve despite the challenges of traveling from different parts of the country.
“Your presence here reflects the deep-rooted love you have for this party and your determination to see it not only survive but thrive. You have been carefully selected to play a critical role in delivering a convention that will be successful and secure,” Akobundu said.
He noted that the committee comprises experienced professionals, including retired generals, officers of the Department of State Services (DSS), the Police, and administrative personnel, all tasked with creating a robust security architecture for the convention.
According to him, the subcommittee’s responsibilities include ensuring perimeter security, intelligence gathering, and close coordination with relevant security agencies.
Akobundu stressed the need to leverage the expertise of members with security backgrounds to design security programmes and assign specific roles.
“This is a difficult job, and I must tell you, I’ve been part of this for a very long time. We must work hand in hand with security agencies to guarantee a seamless convention,” he added.
Also speaking, Tanimu Turaki, Deputy Chairman of the National Convention Organising Committee (NCOC), assured the subcommittee of full support from the party’s leadership.
“The success of the convention is 85% dependent on the work of this committee. Security is key, whether at the perimeter, inside the venue, or ensuring the process runs smoothly. You have been selected because of the unique value you bring individually and collectively,” Turaki stated.
He expressed confidence that with the level of commitment shown, the PDP would deliver a convention that would set a benchmark for other political parties.
“At the end of the day, we want to look back and say we organised the best convention in Nigeria’s political history. This is PDP, it’s either PDP or nothing,” he declared.
The Ibadan National Convention is expected to be a major event in the party’s calendar, drawing delegates and stakeholders from across the country.
