Former Kano State Governor, Ibrahim Shekarau, has called on the Nigerian government to adopt a calm and diplomatic approach in responding to recent remarks attributed to U.S. President Donald Trump.
Speaking on the development, Shekarau described the matter as “purely political and diplomatic,” advising Nigerian authorities to avoid harsh rhetoric and instead focus on constructive engagement.
He said, “Government should handle it diplomatically, politically, quietly, without raising any dust. Two wrongs don’t make a right,” he said.
“If Trump decides to be harsh, Nigeria should not respond harshly. We must rely on dialogue and diplomacy.”
Shekarau emphasised that misinformation about Nigeria in international circles often fuels misunderstanding, urging the federal government to take proactive steps to correct such narratives.
“America has been fed with wrong information. Our duty now is to counter that wrong information with the correct one, and I’m sure they will understand,” he added.
The former governor’s counsel reflects a growing call for strategic diplomacy in safeguarding Nigeria’s global image following the controversy.
