Nigeria has received its first shipment of long-acting injectable Lenacapavir (LEN) for HIV prevention, marking a significant milestone in the country’s efforts to strengthen HIV prevention and reduce new infections.

In a statement by the Federal Director and National Coordinator, NASCP–FMOH&SW, Dr Adebobola Bashorun, the National AIDS, Viral Hepatitis and STIs Control Programme (NASCP) of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare announced that the injectable drug for Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis (PrEP) arrived in the country on March 10 2026.

The programme explained that the introduction of Lenacapavir was approved by the Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare and supported through the Global Fund, reflecting Nigeria’s commitment to expanding innovative HIV prevention options.

According to NASCP, Lenacapavir represents a major advancement in HIV prevention, as it offers a long-acting injectable option for individuals at risk of HIV infection.

The programme noted that the injectable PrEP could help improve adherence to prevention treatment, particularly among individuals who face challenges using daily oral HIV prevention drugs.

“The arrival of the medication demonstrates Nigeria’s continued dedication to adopting innovative and evidence-based strategies aimed at accelerating progress toward HIV epidemic control,” it stated.

It added that the programme would work closely with partners and stakeholders to ensure the safe introduction, strategic deployment and effective integration of Lenacapavir into the country’s HIV prevention services.

The rollout of the injectable prevention option is expected to strengthen ongoing efforts to expand access to HIV prevention services and improve health outcomes for vulnerable populations across Nigeria.

NASCP reaffirmed its commitment to promoting equitable access to HIV prevention, testing, treatment and care services, noting that the introduction of Lenacapavir reflects Nigeria’s resolve to scale up innovative solutions in the fight against HIV.

The programme emphasised that with continued collaboration and strengthened interventions, Nigeria is moving closer to ending HIV as a public health threat.
