The Accountant General of Nasarawa State, Rt Hon. Musa Ahmed Mohammed, has officially resigned his appointment to join the state’s 2027 gubernatorial race.

Mohammed, who previously served as the Speaker of the 3rd Nasarawa State House of Assembly from 2007 to 2015, made his announcement in Lafia, citing a call from stakeholders throughout the state.

The formal declaration followed a coordinated appeal by state stakeholders, led by Anthony Obande, who urged the Accountant General to transition from the treasury to the Government House to ensure the continuity of the current administration’s fiscal policies.

Addressing a gathering of supporters and political associates, Mohammed, popularly known by his traditional title, Baraden Nasarawa revealed that his decision was the result of persistent pressure over the last three years.

“For your own sake, and for the sake of the people of Nasarawa State, I have accepted to contest the number one seat of the state. I have resigned my appointment as Accountant General for your sake to join the race. For the past three years, you have been calling me to come out. I would like to inform you that I have accepted your call”, Mohammed declared.

He emphasized that his choice to step down from a high-ranking civil service position was a sacrifice prompted by the stakeholders’ recognition of his leadership capacity and professional integrity.

The resignation comes at a high-stakes moment in Nasarawa politics. Just hours before the announcement, Governor Abdullahi Sule reportedly held a high-level meeting in Abuja with gubernatorial aspirants from the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Sources within the party suggest that Mohammed is viewed by many as an “ideal successor” who could consolidate Governor Sule’s legacy of industrialization and fiscal prudence.

During his tenure as Accountant General, Mohammed was a key figure in implementing the administration’s transparency programmes and recently authored a book titled Governor A.A. Sule: From Vision to Reality.

From Speaker to Governor-Aspirant
Musa Ahmed Mohammed brings a different type of legislative and executive experience to his bid.

Having served two terms as Speaker, he is well-versed in the state’s political dynamics. Since his appointment as Accountant General in 2023, he has been credited with strengthening the state’s internal financial controls.

Supporters at the declaration rally described him as a “stabilising force” and a “loyalist” who understood the inner workings of the current government.

With this resignation, the race to succeed Governor Abdullahi Sule in 2027 has officially entered a more competitive phase, as Mohammed becomes one of the highest-ranking officials to exit the current cabinet to pursue the top job.
