Defence Minister Receives Rare National Fellowship Recognition Milestone

Nokai Origin, Abuja

The Minister of Defence, General Christopher Gwabin Musa (Rtd), has been conferred with an Honorary Fellowship by the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors in recognition of his leadership, service and contributions to national security, marking one of the rarest honours awarded by the institution.

The conferment took place on Monday, 4 May 2026, at the Ministry of Defence Headquarters, Ship House, Abuja.

According to the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, the award represents only the second time in its history that such a distinction has been bestowed, underscoring the exceptional nature of the recognition accorded to the Minister. The institute noted that the ceremony, initially scheduled for December 2025, was brought forward in view of service exigencies and the need to formally acknowledge the Minister’s performance.

The Minister of Defence described the honour as a reflection of General Musa’s professionalism, commitment and leadership in advancing national security objectives, as well as the collective efforts of the Armed Forces of Nigeria in safeguarding territorial integrity and supporting national development.

The Minister further reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening collaboration with professional institutions, noting that partnerships with bodies such as the Nigerian Institution of Surveyors remain critical to national growth, infrastructure development and institutional resilience.

The Nigerian Institution of Surveyors, established in 1934 as the Licensed Surveyors Association under the leadership of Herbert Heelas Macaulay, is one of Nigeria’s oldest professional bodies and has played a longstanding role in the development of surveying practice and land administration in the country.
