NMA Calls for Sustained Health Reforms

The Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) has congratulated Dr Afam Obidike on his reappointment as Commissioner for Health in Anambra State, describing the move as a vote of confidence in his leadership and prior performance.

In a statement issued on Wednesday by its National Publicity Secretary, Olayinka Atilola, on behalf of NMA President Afekhide Earnest Omoti and the association’s National Officers’ Committee, the body said the reappointment by Charles Soludo reflects continuity in the state’s health sector agenda.

The association commended reforms undertaken during Obidike’s previous tenure, particularly in strengthening primary healthcare systems, expanding the recruitment and retention of doctors and other health workers, and improving access to essential services in underserved rural areas.

It also cited progress in health system digitisation, including the introduction of electronic medical records and data-driven planning, as well as partnerships with international development organisations to support disease control, maternal and child health, and immunisation programmes.

The NMA further stressed the importance of consolidating gains in key areas such as universal health coverage, emergency preparedness, and the prevention and control of communicable and non-communicable diseases. It called for sustained investment in health infrastructure, workforce training, and supply chain systems to ensure the availability of essential medicines and equipment.

According to the statement, continued policy consistency and increased funding would be critical to improving health outcomes, reducing mortality rates, and strengthening the overall resilience of the state’s healthcare system.

The association reaffirmed its willingness to collaborate with the Anambra State Government to advance policies that promote equitable, accessible, and high-quality healthcare for residents.
