Nigeria’s Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Hajiya Imaan Sulaiman-Ibrahim, has paid a courtesy visit to the Inspector-General of Police to strengthen institutional collaboration in advancing national development, security, and inclusive policing.

The Minister, while commending the Inspector-General for being “gender friendly,” said the visit was aimed at deepening collaboration on the role of women in peace and security.

Sulaiman-Ibrahim, a former Minister of State for Police Affairs, appealed for the creation of more leadership opportunities for women within the Nigeria Police Force, including the appointment of more Commissioners of Police and Deputy Inspectors-General.

She also pledged support for the training of Force gender focal personnel to deepen institutional capacity for gender-responsive policing.

Advocating stronger support for the Police Officers’ Wives Association, the Minister described the association as “a backbone of the force because they keep the home stable so that the police men and women can confidently discharge their duties.”

She maintained that the Nigeria Police Force, being “one of the greatest numbers in Africa,” possesses the capacity and potential “to be the best in the world.”

According to her, the numerical strength of the Force could be harnessed “to create a system that keeps the force self-sustaining.”

The Minister further drew attention to the United Nations Security Council Resolution on Women, Peace and Security, which has been integrated into the National Action Plan III (NAP III).

The Third National Action Plan on Women, Peace and Security, launched in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital on December 15, 2025, is aimed at strengthening women’s role in conflict prevention and peacebuilding between 2024 and 2028.

Responding, the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Rilwan Disu, thanked the Minister for the visit and disclosed that the Nigeria Police Force had “always created room for women,” noting that the process was evolving and growing.

He said there were high-ranking Deputy Inspectors-General and Commissioners of Police among “a high percentage of exceptional women police officers” who were doing remarkably well in the Force and expanding the frontiers of inclusion.

The IGP further stated that under the administration of President Bola Tinubu, the Force remains focused on ensuring that the Nigeria Police Force “gets to the pinnacle of excellence.”

He affirmed the commitment of the Force to collaborate and maintain openness to all recommendations aimed at strengthening inclusion and institutional development.

The Minister’s visit underscores ongoing efforts towards purposeful engagement and leadership-driven partnerships to advance the welfare, protection, and empowerment of Nigerians nationwide.
