The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has called for a comprehensive investigation into the attempted violent invasion of its National Secretariat in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
The National leadership of the party urged security agencies to identify and prosecute both those directly involved and any individuals sponsoring the attack.
A statement issued by the Special Adviser on Media to the National Chairman of the party Mr. Lawal Ibrahim described the incident at the SDP National Secretariat on Friday ‘as a serious threat to democratic processes, public order, and the safety of its members and staff.’
Mr.Lawal Ibrahim also condemned the attacked on the secretariat and called it as an “attempted invasion of the party’s secretariat by suspected hoodlums and criminal elements.”
According to the statement, the suspected attackers were allegedly acting in the interest of certain individuals seeking to impose themselves as the party’s presidential candidate ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The party said the attempted attack was aimed at disrupting activities at the secretariat before the timely intervention of security operatives prevented the situation from escalating.
“The Social Democratic Party strongly condemns the attempted violent invasion of its National Secretariat in Abuja by suspected hoodlums and criminal elements.
“It is imperative for security agencies to carry out a thorough investigation into the incident, identify those directly involved, as well as any sponsors or financiers behind the attack, and ensure that they are brought to justice,” the statement read.
The SDP maintained that the development poses a danger not only to the party but also to Nigeria’s democratic system, stressing that political disagreements must never degenerate into violence or intimidation.
The party further alleged that the incident was linked to efforts by some political interests to destabilise its internal structures and forcefully advance personal ambitions within the party.
While commending security operatives for their swift response, the SDP called on law enforcement agencies to strengthen security around the party’s national headquarters and ensure the safety of party officials and members.
The statement added that the party remained committed to democratic principles, internal party discipline, and the rule of law, insisting that leadership and candidacy issues must be resolved through lawful and constitutional means.
