Former Minister of Labour and Employment, Joel Ikenya of Taraba State, has declared his intention to run for the governorship of Taraba State, pledging to tackle poverty, strengthen security, and boost agriculture and healthcare delivery across the state.
Speaking on his ambition after the PDP screening exercise in Abuja, Ikenya highlighted his extensive political experience, having served as a member of the State House of Assembly, House of Representatives, Senator, and Minister under former President Goodluck Ebele Jonathan.
According to him, his aspiration is driven by a desire to improve the lives of the people of Taraba State, particularly through agriculture, given the state’s agrarian nature.
“I believe this is the right time for me. Taraba is blessed with enormous potential, and I want to use the opportunity to pull our people out of poverty through agriculture and improved healthcare delivery,” he said.
On security, Ikenya stressed the need for collective responsibility between government and citizens, noting that security challenges can only be addressed through collaboration at all levels.
“Security is not an individual responsibility. It requires cooperation between government, communities, and citizens to ensure that people can go to their farms, conduct business freely, and return home safely,” he stated.
He also pointed to Taraba’s vast natural resources and economic opportunities, especially in solid minerals and the long-delayed Mambilla Hydroelectric Power Project.
“Taraba has everything. If you talk about solid minerals, we are among the best. The Mambilla Hydro Project alone can significantly transform Nigeria’s power sector. With the right leadership and cooperation with the Federal Government, the project can become a reality,” he said.
Ikenya further emphasised that political will remains critical to achieving meaningful development.
Responding to concerns about lacking the support of political godfathers during his previous governorship bid, the former minister said he places his trust first in God.
“I prefer to have the real Godfather, which is God Almighty, because He gives power to whom He wishes. At that time, I believe it was not my turn, but now I believe it is my time. Both spiritual and physical godfathers will support me now,” he added.
