Beautiful Beginning Academy Wins NUJ Quiz Competition

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, organised a quiz competition on media literacy and journalism for students in the Federal Capital Territory on Thursday as part of efforts to promote press clubs in secondary schools.

Beautiful Beginning Academy, Abuja, emerged as the winner after defeating Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe, 8–6 in a closely contested tie-breaker. Both schools had finished level on 205 points at the end of the second round.

In the first round, Government Senior Secondary School (GSS), Garki, scored 70 points, while GSS Gwarimpa scored 80 points. Cedar Hall Academy, Lugbe, scored 95 points, while Beautiful Beginning Academy led with 115 points.

At the end of the second round, GSS Garki scored 40 points, GSS Gwarimpa scored 80 points, Cedar Hall Academy scored 110 points, and Beautiful Beginning Academy scored 90 points.

In her remarks, the Council Chairman, Ms Grace Ike, said the quiz was designed to mentor the younger generation on how the media operates, as well as to revive press clubs in schools. She commended all participating schools for their performance and urged teachers to sustain press club activities.

“Teachers, please organise your press clubs and, once in a while, host events and invite the NUJ-FCT Council. We will come,” she said.

Ms Ike added that the exercise would promote media literacy, mentorship, and community engagement among students in the FCT.

“The NUJ-FCT Council will continue to create opportunities that empower young people and promote educational and media-related activities within our schools,” she said.

Earlier, Yahaya Ndambabo, Coordinator of Press Clubs and Vice Chairman of the NUJ-FCT Council, said the programme reflects the council’s commitment to promoting journalism, media literacy, intellectual development, and responsible communication among young people.

“The NUJ-FCT Council remains passionate about strengthening press clubs in our schools,” he said. “Through these clubs, students are encouraged to develop critical thinking, communication skills, confidence, leadership qualities, and an interest in journalism and public affairs.”

A representative from the Secondary Education Board, alongside other teachers, was present at the event.

Students who spoke after the competition described the exercise as a welcome development and the first of its kind.

The high point of the event was the presentation of awards and cash prizes to the winners by the Council Chairman, Comrade Grace Ike.
