Human rights activist Omoyele Sowore has secured the presidential nomination of the African Action Congress (AAC) for Nigeria’s 2027 election after emerging unopposed at the party’s primary in Abuja, Nigeria’s capital.
Swore would be embarking on his third consecutive presidential run in Africa’s most populous nation.
Delegates and party leaders unanimously endorsed Sowore during the primary, underscoring his continued dominance within the AAC, the political movement he founded in 2018.
Following his emergence as the party’s consensus candidate, he stepped down as the party’s national chairman and was formally presented with the AAC flag amid cheers from supporters.
In his acceptance speech, Sowore pledged to pursue what he described as a “revolutionary change” aimed at transforming Nigeria’s political and economic systems.
He stressed the need for collective efforts to address challenges such as corruption, unemployment, insecurity and governance gaps, noting that tackling these issues is essential to improving the living conditions of Nigerians, especially the youth.
“A new Nigeria anchored on accountability, justice and people-centred governance remains our vision,” Sowore told party members, while thanking delegates across the country for what he described as their resilience and commitment despite political pressure.

He argued that genuine political strength comes from grassroots mobilisation rather than elite political alliances.
In Nigeria’s 2019 presidential election, he finished fifth with 33,953 votes, while in the 2023 election he secured 14,608 votes.
Speaking at the event, Chairman of the Primary Election Committee, Kayode Babayemi, said Sowore’s adoption reflected the party’s confidence in his commitment to democratic values and reform.
“I declare Omoyele Sowore as the consensus presidential candidate of the African Action Congress,” Babayemi said.
“This decision reflects the confidence of the party in his consistency in leadership and long-term commitment to the struggle for justice, freedom and a truly democratic Nigeria,” he added.
He also commended AAC members and supporters for their dedication to the party’s ideals as preparations for the 2027 election cycle intensify.
