Kwara Police Debunk Viral Boko Haram Arrest Claim

Tunde Akanbi, Ilorin

The Kwara State Police Command has dismissed as false and misleading a viral social media report claiming that suspected Boko Haram members were arrested in Ilorin, warning that the misinformation is capable of causing unnecessary panic among residents.

In a statement issued by the Police Public Relations Officer, SP Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the Command categorically denied the report, stressing that no Boko Haram suspect was arrested anywhere within the state.

The Command described the claim as “entirely unfounded and capable of generating fear and tension,” urging members of the public to disregard it in its entirety.

For clarity, the police explained that operatives of the Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU) carried out an intelligence-led surveillance operation in Ilorin on Tuesday, May 27, 2026, at about 8:00 p.m.

Proactive Policing

During the operation, officers intercepted a truck conveying several Fulani travellers within the Ilorin metropolis as part of routine security checks and proactive policing measures.

According to the statement, the vehicle and its occupants were professionally screened, profiled, and thoroughly searched in line with established security protocols.

The Command confirmed that no incriminating items, weapons, or security threats were discovered on any of the occupants.

It further stated that the individuals informed security operatives that they were travellers en route to Jigawa State, adding that their details were properly documented for security purposes before they were allowed to continue their journey.

Upon conclusion of the screening process, the travellers were peacefully escorted out of the metropolis,” the statement noted.

Strategic Deployment

The Commissioner of Police, Adekimi Ojo, reassured residents that the command has strengthened intelligence gathering, surveillance operations, and strategic deployments across the state to enhance public safety and respond swiftly to any genuine threat.

He urged residents to remain calm, vigilant, and supportive of security agencies while avoiding the spread of unverified information capable of undermining public peace.

The Command also reiterated its warning against the circulation of fake security alerts, noting that such reports can trigger fear and disrupt public order in Kwara State, particularly in major urban centres like Ilorin.
