FCTA Distributes Vein Finders to Improve Healthcare Delivery

By Hudu Yakubu, Abuja

The Federal Capital Territory Administration (FCTA) has distributed 48 vein finders and related accessories to 14 secondary healthcare facilities under the Hospitals Management Board (HMB) as part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery across the territory.

The Senior Special Assistant to the FCT Minister on Public Communications and Social Media, Lere Olayinka, disclosed this in a statement issued on Wednesday.

According to the statement, the Mandate Secretary of the Health Services and Environment Secretariat (HSES), Dr Dolapo Fasawe, said the equipment was procured through the support of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, and described the devices as essential tools for modern healthcare delivery.

Dr Fasawe explained that the advanced medical devices would improve patient care by enhancing the accuracy and efficiency of venous access procedures.

She noted that vein finders assist healthcare professionals in locating veins for intravenous (IV) cannulation and blood sample collection, particularly among patients with difficult venous anatomy, including children, older persons and individuals with obesity.

According to her, the devices will reduce the need for multiple needle insertions, making procedures quicker, less painful and less traumatic for patients.

“The machines will make it easier to access a patient’s veins in a timely and less invasive manner. They will also support newly trained doctors in establishing intravenous access more accurately, especially for children, thereby improving the overall patient experience,” she said.

Dr Fasawe added that the equipment would also enable healthcare workers to assess superficial vein patterns more effectively, leading to greater clinical efficiency and accuracy.

As part of the distribution exercise, healthcare personnel from the beneficiary hospitals participated in practical training sessions on the operation, application, maintenance and safe handling of the devices.

The training was designed to ensure the effective deployment, sustainability and optimal utilisation of the equipment across the healthcare facilities.

The initiative reflects the commitment of the FCT Administration to strengthening healthcare services through the provision of modern medical technology and improving the quality of care available to residents.
