Chinese President and General Secretary of the Communist Party of China, Xi Jinping, will make a state visit to the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea from June 8–9 at the invitation of Kim Jong Un. The visit, Xi’s first to the DPRK in seven years, coincides with the 65th anniversary of the China-DPRK Treaty of Friendship, Cooperation and Mutual Assistance.
In recent years, relations between China and the DPRK have strengthened under the leadership of both countries, with growing cooperation in trade, culture, education, transportation and youth exchanges.
Economic ties have continued to expand, with bilateral trade reaching $2.74 billion in 2025. Chinese companies have increased participation in DPRK trade fairs, while border trade and business engagements have grown steadily.
People-to-people exchanges have also gained momentum following the resumption of rail, road and air links between the two countries. Cultural cooperation remains active through film festivals, artistic performances and friendship programmes.

Youth and educational exchanges are flourishing as more DPRK students study Chinese and increasing numbers of Chinese students pursue studies in North Korea. Universities in both countries are strengthening academic cooperation, language education and talent development initiatives.
The growing partnership is viewed as a positive force for regional stability, economic cooperation and the preservation of the longstanding friendship between the two neighbouring nations.
