The Nigerian Government has reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening Nigeria’s hydrographic capabilities, positioning marine data and ocean intelligence as critical tools for national defence, maritime safety and the expansion of the blue economy.
The Minister of State for Defence, Dr Bello Matawalle, made the commitment while receiving the newly appointed Hydrographer of the Federation and Chief Executive Officer of the National Hydrographic Agency (NHA), Rear Admiral O.O. Fadahunsi, and his management team during a courtesy visit in Abuja.
According to the Minister, hydrography has evolved beyond traditional maritime mapping into a strategic capability that supports national security, economic planning and sustainable use of ocean resources.
Dr Matawalle stated that the Renewed Hope Administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu remains committed to strengthening the National Hydrographic Agency and improving Nigeria’s ability to provide accurate maritime data for operations and development.

He described the NHA as a key institution in advancing Nigeria’s maritime capacity and supporting wider Gulf of Guinea maritime objectives.
The Minister noted that discussions with the NHA management focused on expanding Nigeria’s hydrographic capacity to improve navigational safety, enhance maritime security and support sustainable maritime development.
The policy direction reflects a growing recognition that control and understanding of maritime spaces are essential to protecting national interests, securing trade routes and unlocking economic opportunities from ocean resources.
Through improved hydrographic systems, Nigeria seeks to strengthen its position within regional maritime affairs while supporting safer commercial activities and long-term blue economy growth.
Dr Matawalle further noted that with existing policy frameworks, Nigeria has the potential to play a leading role in advancing hydrography across West Africa.
Rear Admiral Fadahunsi, while appreciating the Minister’s support, assured that the agency would strengthen collaboration with relevant ministries, departments and agencies to build an integrated approach toward hydrographic resilience and improved service delivery.
