The Minister of Solid Minerals Development, Dele Alake, has called on Nigerians to renew their commitment to building a stable and prosperous nation as the country marks Democracy Day.
In a message posted on his X handle, Alake said June 12 serves as a reminder that Nigeria’s democracy was achieved through sacrifice and must be sustained through collective dedication.
“As we mark Democracy Day, I join millions of Nigerians in reflecting on the profound courage and resilience that shape our democratic journey,” Alake wrote.

Alake noted that Nigeria’s freedom was “bought with genuine sacrifice, not mere words”, adding that democracy requires the active participation of citizens every day.
“June 12 serves as a constant reminder that our democracy requires active collective dedication every single day.”
The Minister therefore urged Nigerians to use the occasion to recommit themselves to national development and unity.
“Let us use this milestone to recommit ourselves to building a stable, prosperous Nigeria that truly works for everyone,” Alake said.
June 12 Democracy Day commemorates the annulled 1993 presidential election, widely regarded as the freest and fairest in Nigeria’s history, and honours the sacrifices made in the struggle for democratic governance.
