The Minority Caucus in Nigeria’s House of Representatives has expressed concern over the security situation in the country and called for strengthened measures to address insecurity.
Speaking at a press briefing in Abuja, the Minority Leader of the House, Mr Frederick Agbedi, on behalf of the caucus, mourned the former Director of Defence Information, retired Major General Rabe Abubakar, who died following his and wife’s abduction by bandits.
The caucus described the incident as ‘unfortunate’ and called “for a thorough investigation into the circumstances surrounding the abduction and death of the retired military officer.”
It also urged the Nigerian Government to review and strengthen the nation’s security architecture to improve intelligence gathering and enhance the safety of citizens.
The lawmakers further called “for increased support and welfare for security personnel engaged in operations across the country.”
On the reported abduction of schoolchildren and teachers in Oyo State, the caucus appealed to security agencies to intensify efforts towards their safe rescue.
The lawmakers raised concerns over conflicting judicial pronouncements relating to political party matters and called on relevant institutions to ensure clarity and adherence to due process.
The caucus urged all stakeholders to prioritise national security and economic recovery while working towards strengthening democratic institutions and public confidence in governance.
It reaffirmed its commitment to using legislative processes to advance accountability and promote policies aimed at improving the welfare and security of Nigerians.
