Nigeria to Deliver 22m Fertiliser Bags in 2026

By Temitope Mustapha, Abuja

President Bola Tinubu says Nigeria remains on course to deliver a 1.1 million metric tonne fertiliser programme in 2026, equivalent to about 22 million bags nationwide, as part of efforts to boost agricultural productivity and strengthen food security.

The President made this known on Thursday in a statement issued by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Mr Bayo Onanuga, while commending the Ministry of Finance Incorporated (MOFI) and the National Agricultural Development Fund (NADF).

He commended them for their roles in strengthening Nigeria’s fertiliser value chain, expanding farmers’ access to agricultural inputs and advancing the administration’s food security objectives.

The President also disclosed that strategic contracting arrangements for key fertiliser inputs generated savings of ₦61.58 billion in 2026 alone, helping to moderate costs and improve affordability for farmers across the country.

He further revealed that Nigeria now has more than 90 operational fertiliser blending plants, giving the country the largest fertiliser blending capacity in Sub-Saharan Africa while supporting local industry, job creation and agricultural resilience.

President Tinubu said interventions under the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative (PFI), now restructured under MOFI, and the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme (RH-FISP), implemented through NADF, demonstrate the administration’s commitment to making food security a central pillar of the Renewed Hope Agenda.

According to the President, the government has remained focused on supporting farmers, strengthening local production, reducing dependence on imports and building a resilient agricultural system capable of withstanding external shocks.

He noted that disruptions in global supply chains, rising costs of fertiliser inputs and conflicts in the Middle East posed significant risks to agricultural productivity and food prices worldwide.

Strategic Intervention

However, he said Nigeria moved early to mitigate the impact through strategic interventions across the fertiliser value chain.

President Tinubu explained that through the Presidential Fertiliser Initiative under MOFI, the government strengthened procurement systems, secured critical raw materials, entered into forward supply agreements and improved coordination across the value chain, thereby protecting local fertiliser blending plants from the adverse effects of global market disruptions.

He revealed that as of May 2026, more than 449,000 metric tonnes of fertiliser inputs, equivalent to approximately nine million bags, had been secured, while ten vessels carrying fertiliser materials had either been discharged or were in transit.

The President further explained that while MOFI’s efforts focused on securing inputs and sustaining local blending capacity, NADF concentrated on ensuring last-mile access so that fertiliser reaches smallholder farmers in time for planting seasons.

Securing inputs and keeping blending plants active is only the first step. The real test is last-mile access — getting fertiliser to the farmers who need it, when they need it,” he said.

Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme

President Tinubu also commended NADF for implementing the Renewed Hope Farm Input Support Programme, which is currently distributing 515,720 bags of locally produced fertiliser to 128,930 smallholder farmers across 25 states and the Federal Capital Territory.

He acknowledged the agency’s support for modern agricultural practices through digital extension services, harmonised fertiliser application guidelines and targeted interventions for priority crops such as rice, maize, cassava and soybean.

Reaffirming his administration’s commitment to protecting farmers and strengthening food security, the President pledged continued support for agricultural productivity, stronger value chains, local industries and measures aimed at reducing pressure on food prices.

Our administration will not relent in its efforts to strengthen Nigerian agriculture and protect food security for every Nigerian. This is the meaning of promise made, promise kept. We will continue to take practical steps that improve productivity, support our farmers and secure our nation’s food future,” President Tinubu added.
