The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) and the China Meteorological Administration (CMA) have reaffirmed their commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation through the deployment of artificial intelligence and advanced early warning systems to improve weather and climate services.
According to a statement issued by NiMet, the commitment was made during a bilateral meeting between the Director-General and Chief Executive Officer of NiMet, Prof. Charles Anosike, and the Administrator and Director-General of the China Meteorological Administration, Dr. Chen Zhenlin, on the sidelines of the 80th Session of the World Meteorological Organisation (WMO) Executive Council in Geneva, Switzerland.
Both officials, who also serve as their respective countries’ Permanent Representatives to the WMO, agreed to deepen collaboration by adopting and customising the MAZU AI Early Warning Platform for Nigeria.

They also pledged to leverage emerging artificial intelligence technologies to enhance weather forecasting, climate monitoring, and disaster preparedness.
As part of the renewed partnership, both agencies agreed to develop a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) covering the deployment of the MAZU platform, staff exchange programmes, joint research, data sharing, remote sensing, aviation meteorology research, knowledge exchange, and scholarship opportunities.
The collaboration is expected to strengthen Nigeria’s meteorological capabilities while promoting innovation, capacity building, and socioeconomic development through improved climate and weather services.
