Former world champion boxer Zolani Tete, 38, from South Africa, has been shot dead at his home in Mdantsane, Eastern Cape.
Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie said Tete was killed in his car, while a 27-year-old woman who was with him was shot multiple times and taken to hospital.
Police said Tete was arriving at his residence and waiting for the gate to open when two armed suspects wearing balaclavas ambushed him.
Tete won the WBF flyweight world title in 2007 and held it until 2008 before becoming WBO bantamweight world champion in 2017 and 2019.
Police said investigations into the shooting were ongoing.
