The Nigerian government has expressed its commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian child, irrespective of location or socio-economic background, has access to competent teachers, quality instruction and meaningful learning opportunities, as stakeholders validate standardised lesson plans for schools nationwide.

The Minister of State for Education, Professor Suwaiba Sa’id Ahmad, said that the development of standardised lesson plans covering 26 core subjects across basic and post-basic education levels in Nigeria, presents a significant milestone in strengthening classroom instruction nationwide.

Thw Minister was speaking at the opening ceremony of a one-day lesson plan validation workshop for the “Teachers Supporting Teachers Initiative”, organised by the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) in Abuja.

Represented by Dr Director of Colleges of Education Department, Federal Ministry of Education, Dr Uche Uba, the Miniater said the lesson plans are more than instructional documents.

“They are practical tools that will support teachers in delivering the national curriculum effectively, consistently and confidently,” stressing that the expected benefits are enormous.

“These lesson plans will reduce the burden on teachers by minimising the time spent on preparing daily lesson notes, allowing them to give a great message with added interaction, learner engagement, creativity, and assessment.

“It will promote equality by ensuring that learners, whether in our urban centres or in the remotest communities,  have access to comparable quality of instruction.

“ It will equally enhance quality assurance  by promoting consistency in curriculum delivery while still allowing teachers the flexibility  to adopt lessons to the needs of their learners,” said the minister.

She said the initiative demonstrates the strength of professional collaboration, as the Teachers Supporting Teachers Initiative reflects the noble principle that the teaching profession grows stronger when experienced professionals share knowledge, mentor one another and collectively improve classroom practice.

Professor Suwaiba urged participants to carry out the assignment with professionalism and objectivity, saying their feedback would strengthen the lesson plans and ensure they meet the highest professional standards.

TRCN Registrar, Dr Ronke Soyombo, said the validation workshop is aimed at improving teachers’ subject knowledge, easing lesson plan preparation and supporting personalised learning for learners of different abilities.

She said outstanding teachers from the six geopolitical zones were selected to validate the plans, with emphasis on using local examples and AI-generated lesson plans that can be printed by teachers without digital access.

Soyombo added that the validated lesson plans would be rolled out across all 774 local government areas before implementation begins in September 2026, while commending UNESCO for supporting the initiative.

The UNESCO representative, Mohammed Ibrahim, described the initiative as timely, saying standardised lesson plans would support teachers across all levels and advance quality, inclusive education in line with Sustainable Development Goal 4.

He added that the lesson plans would enhance teachers’ professionalism, improve learning outcomes and come at a crucial time for both teachers and learners.
