Security Agencies Highlight Major Operational Gains

Nokai Origin, Abuja

The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA), Nigeria Customs Service (NCS), Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) and Federal Fire Service (FFS) have highlighted significant operational achievements aimed at strengthening Nigeria’s preventive security architecture.

The agencies presented their first-half 2026 performance reports during the Joint Security Press Briefing in Abuja, outlining efforts to address security threats through enforcement, intelligence gathering, rehabilitation and emergency response.

The NDLEA said it had intensified efforts to target entire drug supply chains rather than isolated offenders.

Presenting the agency’s operational update, the Director of Media and Advocacy disclosed that between January and May 2026, NDLEA dismantled Nigeria’s largest clandestine methamphetamine laboratory, arrested 9,769 suspects, secured 1,778 convictions, including 65 drug kingpins, dismantled 144 organised criminal groups and seized more than 517 tonnes of illicit drugs.

The agency identified its most significant breakthrough as the dismantling of a transnational methamphetamine syndicate operating across Ogun and Lagos states, leading to the recovery of narcotics and precursor chemicals valued at approximately ₦480 billion.

Sensitisation Campaign

Alongside enforcement, NDLEA expanded rehabilitation efforts by counselling and treating 6,533 drug users while reaching about 770,000 Nigerians through its nationwide War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) sensitisation campaign.

Border Management Is Increasingly Combining Trade Facilitation With Security Enforcement

The Nigeria Customs Service presented border security as a dual mission that simultaneously protects Nigeria’s economy and disrupts transnational criminal networks.

Between January and May 2026, the Service processed 698,817 Single Goods Declarations, issued 112,202 Pre-Arrival Assessment Reports, generated ₦3.35 trillion in revenue and facilitated exports valued at $1.218 billion.

Beyond revenue generation, Customs intercepted 122 illicit drug consignments with a Duty Paid Value of ₦24.33 billion, uncovered six major currency declaration violations involving about $789,550 and disrupted wildlife trafficking through seizures involving endangered species and protected wildlife products.

The operational picture suggested an increasingly intelligence-driven border management system where economic regulation and national security reinforce one another.

Reduce Future Criminality

The Nigerian Correctional Service highlighted an approach that combines custodial security with offender rehabilitation to reduce future criminality.

Service Public Relations Officer Jane Osuji said that the Service recorded zero custodial breaches nationwide between January and June 2026 while foiling an attempt to smuggle an Improvised Explosive Device into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Ikot Ekpene.

The Service also recovered 1,167 prohibited items during intelligence-led operations, completed or advanced 22 security infrastructure projects and reported that expanded rehabilitation, vocational training and non-custodial programmes contributed to reducing the national recidivism rate from 88 per cent to 30 per cent.

Road Safety Is Becoming An Intelligence Support Function

The Federal Road Safety Corps demonstrated that its role increasingly extends beyond traffic regulation into broader national security support.

Deputy Corps Commander Osondu Ohaeri said road traffic crashes declined by 25.65 per cent between January and May 2026 despite intensified nationwide enforcement.

The Corps arrested 279,414 traffic offenders, booked 308,816 offences, recovered 12 stolen vehicles and launched targeted operations against mix-loading and fake diplomatic number plates under Operation Guduma.

FRSC also continued providing vehicle and driver intelligence to other security agencies in support of criminal investigations.

Emergency Response Is Increasingly Protecting National Resilience

The Federal Fire Service positioned emergency response as an essential component of national resilience and public safety.

Deputy Controller of Fire Paul O. Abraham said firefighters responded to 491 fire incidents during the first quarter of 2026, saved 1,725 lives and protected properties valued at more than ₦305 billion while recording only eight fatalities nationwide.

He added that the service promoted 2,620 officers, inducted more than 700 cadet firefighters during its largest recruitment exercise, rehabilitated over 40 fire appliances and utility vehicles, expanded specialist training and strengthened partnerships to improve industrial fire safety and disaster preparedness.

The agencies said their combined efforts demonstrate an increasingly coordinated security framework that prioritises prevention, institutional collaboration and intelligence-led enforcement as key pillars of Nigeria’s evolving internal security strategy.
