COAS Positions RSM Leadership as Key to Operational Effectiveness

By Nokai Origin, Abuja

The Nigerian Army has identified the leadership role of Regimental Sergeant Majors (RSMs) as a critical driver of operational effectiveness, discipline and combat readiness.

The Chief of Army Staff (COAS), Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, described investment in RSM leadership as an investment in mission success across all theatres of operation.

The position formed the centrepiece of the COAS’s remarks during the commissioning of the newly constructed Regimental Sergeant Major’s House at the Headquarters, 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, according to a statement issued by the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, Colonel Appolonia Anele.

Rather than presenting the project solely as a welfare initiative, the Army leadership described the new accommodation as part of its broader Soldier First philosophy, which links personnel welfare directly to military professionalism, leadership effectiveness and operational capability.

Lieutenant General Shaibu said Regimental Sergeant Majors are the backbone of regimental administration and the custodians of discipline, standards and troop morale throughout the Nigerian Army.

He explained that providing dedicated accommodation for RSMs strengthens leadership at unit level by enabling them to discharge responsibilities that directly influence unit cohesion, discipline and operational effectiveness.

The Army leadership further noted that RSMs serve as the vital link between officers and soldiers, translating commanders’ intent into action while reinforcing professionalism, mentorship and esprit de corps across formations.

The COAS stressed that the influence of RSMs extends beyond administrative responsibilities, noting that effective regimental leadership contributes significantly to operational readiness by sustaining troop morale, enforcing standards and ensuring that command directives are effectively implemented during operations.

He added that improved welfare for key leadership cadres enhances their capacity to perform these responsibilities, reinforcing the Nigerian Army’s objective of building a resilient, professional and combat-ready force capable of responding to Nigeria’s evolving security challenges.

The commissioning also reflects the Army’s continued emphasis on integrating welfare infrastructure into broader force development initiatives, with the Soldier First philosophy remaining a central pillar of Lieutenant General Shaibu’s command vision.
