ACCI Reaffirms Commitment to Inclusive Economic Growth through Cooperatives

By Jennifer Inah, Abuja

The Abuja Chamber of Commerce and Industry (ACCI), has reaffirmed its commitment to promoting cooperative enterprises as a catalyst for inclusive economic growth, financial empowerment and sustainable community development.

The commitment was made as the Chamber joined the global community in commemorating the International Day of Cooperatives.

The President of ACCI, Dr Emeka Obegolu, described cooperatives as critical institutions that foster shared prosperity, economic resilience and social inclusion.

“Cooperative societies have continued to provide practical solutions to the economic challenges faced by individuals, entrepreneurs, and businesses through collective ownership, mutual support, and access to affordable financial services,” Obegolu said.

He noted that the Chamber remained committed to strengthening cooperative initiatives within ACCI, as part of efforts to improve the welfare of members and staff while contributing to national economic development.

“A vibrant Cooperative movement complements government efforts at driving entrepreneurship, job creation, and wealth generation,” he stated.

Also speaking, the Vice President, Finance of ACCI and Chairman of the ACCI Multipurpose Cooperative Society, Dr. Iliyasu Gashinbaki, underscored the importance of cooperatives in improving the socio-economic well-being of members.

Gashinbaki said the ACCI has no doubt contributed immensely to the growth of Multipurpose Cooperative Society in the country.

He said; “The ACCI Multipurpose Cooperative has continued to provide accessible savings, credit facilities, and other member-focused services that support financial stability and business growth.”

Gashinbaki encouraged entrepreneurs, individuals and organisations to adopt the cooperative model as a practical pathway to financial discipline and economic resilience.

“Well-managed Cooperative Societies provide members with opportunities to pool resources, improve access to finance, and pursue common economic goals,” he stated.

According to him, the sustainability of cooperatives depends on accountability and active member participation, adding that “the strength of any cooperative lies in transparency, trust, prudent management, and the active participation of its members.”

The Director General of ACCI, Agabaidu Jideani commended the leadership of the ACCI Multipurpose Cooperative Society for advancing members’ welfare and supporting the institution’s objectives.

He assured members that the Chamber would continue to provide institutional support and create an enabling environment for the cooperative society to thrive.

The International Day of Cooperatives is observed annually to celebrate the contributions of cooperative enterprises to sustainable development, poverty reduction and social cohesion.

This year’s commemoration provided an opportunity for ACCI to reaffirm its support for the cooperative movement as a vehicle for economic empowerment, inclusive prosperity and sustainable national development.
