Food Security: Anambra’s First Lady Promotes Home Gardening

Chinwe Onuigbo, Awka

The Anambra First Lady, Dr Nonye Soludo, has urged Nigerians to embrace home gardening and sustainable agriculture as practical measures to enhance food security, healthy living and economic resilience.

Mrs Soludo made the call while harvesting organic maize from her Healthy Living Farm in Awka, the Anambra State capital.

Dr. Soludo said the harvest underscored the objectives of her Healthy Living with Nonye Soludo initiative, which promotes organic, non-genetically modified (non-GMO) farming, healthy eating and environmentally sustainable agricultural practices.

She noted that healthy living begins with the daily choices people make about the food they grow and consume.

According to her, growing and consuming naturally cultivated foods helps build healthier families, stronger communities and a better future for children.

She stressed that healthy living should go beyond public advocacy to become a way of life, adding that every harvest reflects patience, consistency and responsible stewardship of the environment.

The Anambra First Lady encouraged households across the country to establish home gardens, saying that even small backyard farms can improve household food security, boost access to nutritious food, reduce food expenses and strengthen local food systems.

She also called for wider adoption of sustainable farming practices that protect biodiversity and improve soil fertility, saying that increased participation in agriculture would enable Nigerians to rediscover the richness of nature, promote healthy eating and build a culture where good health begins on farms and extends to every dining table.

Agriculture remains a key driver of Nigeria’s economy, providing livelihoods for millions of people, creating employment, supporting rural development and contributing significantly to national food production.

Dr. Soludo reaffirmed her commitment to promoting healthy lifestyles through sustainable agriculture and urged Nigerians to make home gardening and organic farming part of their daily lives.
