The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Mr Nyesom Wike, has disclosed that about 70 percent of the projects completed by the FCT Administration under President Bola Ahmed Tinubu were abandoned contracts awarded between 15 and 16 years ago.
Wike made the disclosure on Thursday in Abuja while responding to questions from journalists during a media briefing.
He explained that the projects were revived and completed in line with President Tinubu’s directive that no viable government project should be abandoned.
The minister said the administration deliberately prioritised inherited projects before embarking on new ones, noting that leaving them uncompleted would have deprived residents of critical infrastructure and resulted in a waste of public resources.
“The President said we cannot abandon old projects. While we must complete inherited projects, we must also embark on new ones.
“I can tell you that about 70 per cent of the projects we have executed in the last three years were projects awarded 15 to 16 years ago but abandoned.
“If we had allowed that situation to continue, people would still be asking questions about those abandoned projects. We therefore ensured they were completed, and today not less than 70 per cent of them have been delivered,” Wike said.
He added that, alongside completing inherited projects, the FCT Administration had initiated new road and infrastructure projects across Abuja and the satellite towns.
Wike attributed the pace of infrastructure development in the nation’s capital to President Tinubu’s support, particularly the decision to remove the FCT Administration from the Treasury Single Account (TSA), which he said had improved access to funds for capital projects.
He reaffirmed the administration’s commitment to executing projects that would improve transportation, open up new districts and enhance the quality of life of residents across the Federal Capital Territory.
