President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has paid a glowing tribute to former Ogun State Governor and veteran journalist, Chief Olusegun Osoba, on his 86th birthday, describing him as “a brother in purpose” whose life has been defined by service, integrity, and a commitment to Nigeria’s democratic ideals.
In a personally signed message released to State House correspondents on Wednesday, the President reflected on their decades-long relationship, saying they had shared a common vision of a Nigeria governed with competence, respect for institutions and leadership centred on the welfare of the people.
“I have known Aremo Chief Olusegun Osoba for so many years that we could easily write a book about one another,” the President said, adding that behind Chief Osoba’s accomplishments as a journalist and politician “stands a man whose first instinct is always to serve.”

President Tinubu said they remained united by their belief in functional federalism, a free but responsible press and accountable leadership, describing Chief Osoba as a public servant who consistently placed the interests of ordinary Nigerians above political considerations.
Recalling Chief Osoba’s mentorship, the President said the elder statesman encouraged journalists to focus on the human impact of stories and reminded political leaders to remain mindful of the everyday concerns of citizens.
“Chief Osoba embodies those ideals first as a journalist, then as a politician and leader. I watched how he treated young reporters, never with condescension, always with a correction and a story to go with it.
“He would take a bad headline, mark it in red, and then ask, ‘But what is the human angle here? Who is affected?” he said.
President Tinubu also praised Chief Osoba’s consistency, calm disposition and strength of character, saying his historical reflections often provided perspective during difficult moments and helped keep attention on the nation’s long-term goals.
The President prayed for continued good health and long life for the elder statesman, expressing hope that he would witness the continued realisation of the democratic ideals they had championed together, including quality education, durable infrastructure and responsive governance.
“Aremo, thank you for being a brother in purpose. Thank you for the counsel, your laughter, and for the reminder that leadership without character is worthless,” the President stated.
