Nigeria’s First Lady Urges Support for Police Wives

Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has called on wives of police officers to remain resilient, prioritise their mental wellbeing and pursue personal development.

Remi Tinubu made this statement, saying empowered women strengthen families, communities and the nation.

Speaking through Mrs. Lilian Oghogho Musa at the 2026 Annual General Convention of the Police Officers’ Wives Association (POWA) in Abuja, the First Lady said the sacrifices of police officers’ wives play a vital role in national security and deserve greater recognition.

Addressing the convention theme, “The Resilient Woman: Navigating Life’s Challenges with Strength, Purpose and Grace,” Tinubu said it reflects the realities faced by many Nigerian women, especially those married to police officers.

“Your patience, sacrifices, encouragement and support provide the stability that allows them to serve our nation,” she said.

She also stressed the importance of protecting the health and mental wellbeing of police officers’ wives, describing the convention as a platform for learning, networking and personal growth.

“When a woman is empowered, the benefits reach far beyond her home,” the First Lady said.

IGP Commends POWA Members

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, praised POWA members for their unwavering support to police officers and their families.

“Behind every dedicated officer is a family that provides strength, encouragement and stability,” he said.

The IGP reaffirmed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to improving the welfare of personnel and their families through initiatives in education, healthcare, skills acquisition, women’s empowerment and social development.

POWA Celebrates Strength of Police Families

In her welcome address, POWA National President, Chief Mrs. Mutiat Olufunmilola Disu, said the convention was dedicated to recognising and empowering women whose contributions often go unnoticed.

“Today is more than the opening of another convention. It is the gathering of women whose stories are rarely told, yet whose strength quietly keeps the Nigeria Police Force standing,” she said.

She noted that resilience should not mean enduring hardship in silence, but finding hope and strength in difficult circumstances.

Disu also highlighted POWA’s achievements, including healthcare support for over 1,000 police families, expanded economic empowerment programmes, and increased assistance for widows and children of police officers.

“When a police officer’s wife rises, a family rises; when families rise, our Police Force grows stronger; and when the Police Force is stronger, Nigeria is safer,” she said.
