Nigeria Condoles with Colombia over Devastating Earthquake

The Nigerian Government has expressed profound sorrow and sympathy to the Government and people of Colombia following a devastating magnitude 7.4 earthquake that struck western Colombia on August 10, 2026.

In a statement issued by the Spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Kimiebi Ebienfa, Nigeria said the powerful earthquake, reported to be the strongest recorded in Colombia this century, caused significant loss of life, injuries and extensive damage to homes, hospitals, schools and critical infrastructure.

The affected areas include Chocó, Valle del Cauca, Risaralda and surrounding regions.

The Nigerian Government extended heartfelt condolences to families who lost loved ones and wished those injured a speedy and full recovery.

“Nigeria stands in full solidarity with the people of Colombia during this period of national mourning and recovery,” Ebienfa said.

Nigeria also expressed confidence in the resilience and unity of the Colombian people as the country undertakes search-and-rescue operations and begins efforts to rebuild affected communities.

The Nigerian Government commended the leadership of President Abelardo de la Espriella during the emergency response and recovery efforts.

Nigeria and Colombia maintain diplomatic relations, with both countries engaging in areas of mutual interest and cooperation.
