The wife of the Anambra State Governor, Dr Nonye Soludo, has called for greater investment in young people.
The first lady described them as critical stakeholders in national development and urged governments, families and institutions to provide the support needed for them to reach their full potential.
The call came in a statement issued through her Media Aide, Daniel Ezeigwe, to commemorate the 2026 International Youth Day, observed annually on 12 August to spotlight issues affecting young people and promote their active participation in sustainable development.
Speaking on this year’s theme, “Different Contexts, Common Aspirations,” Dr Soludo said the observance highlights the shared hopes and ambitions of young people across different cultures, economic realities and social backgrounds, while underscoring the need for inclusive policies and opportunities that leave no one behind.

She said the theme carries special significance for Nigeria, where a youthful population represents one of the country’s greatest assets for economic growth, innovation and social progress if properly empowered through education, skills acquisition, mentorship and employment opportunities.
According to her, no young person’s background or circumstance should determine the limits of their aspirations, stressing that governments alone cannot shoulder the responsibility of youth development.
She called on parents, schools, faith-based organisations, community leaders, the private sector and development partners to work collaboratively in creating an enabling environment where young people can thrive, contribute meaningfully to society and drive sustainable national development.
Dr Soludo noted that investing in young people remains one of the most strategic decisions any society can make, describing youths as the engine of innovation, entrepreneurship and social transformation.
“Young people are not merely the leaders of tomorrow; they are the real changemakers, innovators, entrepreneurs, creators and problem-solvers shaping our world today,” she stated.
She disclosed that: “As we celebrate International Youth Day, let us continue to create spaces where our young people can learn, build, lead and thrive. Every young person deserves the opportunity to discover their potential and turn their dreams into meaningful impact. The world owes them that.”
The Anambra First Lady also encouraged young people to remain committed to learning, healthy living and personal development, urging them not to underestimate the value of their ideas, energy and resilience in building the society they desire.
“To every young person in Anambra and beyond, believe in yourself, keep learning, stay healthy, and never underestimate the difference you can make. Your ideas, energy and courage are needed in building the future we all truly desire,” she emphasised.
