Dangote Deploys System to Monitor Truck Drivers

Sekinat Salam, Abeokuta

Dangote Transport Limited has introduced a real-time Driver Monitoring Control Room designed to track the activities of truck drivers, in an effort to improve road safety and address unsafe driving practices.

The system was showcased to journalists during a guided tour of the company’s transport operations centre, located in Ibese, Ogun State, Southwest Nigeria.

The Head of Operations, Dangote Transport, Ibese, David Idiege, said the Monitoring Centre is part of the company’s broader safety architecture aimed at reducing road crashes, improving driver behaviour and protecting both drivers and other road users.

He noted that the system enables transport control personnel to monitor drivers while in transit, assess compliance with safety standards, and intervene when risky behaviour is detected.

Idiege stated: “Safety remains our highest priority. We recognise the responsibility that comes with operating a large fleet of vehicles across the country.”

The Head of Operations explained that Dangote Transport combines technology with driver training, competency assessments and strict operational procedures to strengthen road safety.

He listed measures deployed by the company, including speed limiters, vehicle immobilisers, speed-control systems, facial recognition devices, journey management procedures, mandatory drug and alcohol testing, compulsory rest periods, periodic driver recertification and regular training.

Idiege stressed that driver fatigue is a major road safety concern, noting that mandatory rest periods are enforced to ensure drivers remain alert throughout their journeys.

The Head of Transport Control, Ifeanyi Ezeala, explained that on-board cameras installed on Dangote trucks provide real-time information on driver conduct.

He said the system, deployed with technology partner Nova Tracks, provides live feeds and alerts to transport managers when potentially dangerous behaviour is detected.

Ezeala said the technology was intended to identify risks early and enable preventive action.

He stated: “Information generated by the system also strengthens fleet management, improves operational decisions and enhances accountability across the company’s transport network.”

Dangote Transport operates trucks involved in the movement of raw materials and finished products across Nigeria.

The company said the monitoring system forms part of its broader approach to managing driver safety, training, fatigue and vehicle operations.
