The United States is preparing to unveil new economic measures targeting Iran and countries that continue trading with Tehran, as Pakistan’s army chief, Field Marshal Asim Munir, visits Tehran in an effort to promote regional peace.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has described the planned measures as an unprecedented financial offensive against Iran.
“At dawn begins an economic D-Day, the single greatest financial offensive ever marshalled against an adversary,” Bessent wrote.
Washington has warned that countries and entities supporting Iran’s economy could face consequences, although details of the measures were yet to be announced.
Iran has rejected the U.S. pressure and warned that it could halt oil exports from the Gulf if what it describes as an economic war continues.
“If the economic war continues, not a single drop of oil will be exported, neither through the Strait of Hormuz nor from anywhere in the Persian Gulf,” Iran’s Supreme National Security Council secretary, Mohsen Rezaei, said.
He also warned that Iran would regard countries supporting the U.S. economic measures as participating in an “act of war.”
Munir arrived in Tehran on Monday as part of Pakistan’s efforts to mediate between Washington and Tehran. Pakistani officials said the visit was aimed at promoting regional peace and stability.

The diplomatic effort comes amid continued tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, a major global energy route. Iran has imposed restrictions on shipping through the waterway, while disruptions have sharply reduced maritime traffic.
China, a major buyer of Gulf oil, has also opposed the use of sanctions and pressure tactics, saying such measures do not help resolve disputes and that Beijing would protect its interests.
The latest developments add to economic and diplomatic pressure on Iran as Washington prepares its new measures, while regional actors continue efforts to prevent further escalation and protect vital energy and shipping routes.
