Sudan’s Army Chief Appeals to Trump For Peace

Sudan’s army chief, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has reaffirmed his commitment to ending the country’s war, saying he has written to United States President Donald Trump to restate his position.

Burhan made the statement on Thursday amid diplomatic efforts by the United States, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Egypt under the Quad mechanism to end the conflict, which began in April 2023.

Washington has proposed a 90-day humanitarian truce, but the Sudanese army has opposed the proposal.

In September, the United States denied Burhan a visa to attend the United Nations General Assembly, a move seen as pressure on the Sudanese leader over his reservations about the proposed ceasefire.

Earlier in October, Trump’s senior adviser for Arab and African affairs, Massad Boulos, met with Burhan following mediation efforts by Egypt.

The conflict, now in its fourth year, has caused widespread instability in Sudan and received less international attention over the past year amid escalating conflicts in the Middle East.

The war erupted in April 2023 following a power struggle between Sudan’s military and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), which escalated into open fighting in the capital, Khartoum, and other parts of the country.
