China has showcased advances in robotic hand technology at the 2026 World Robot Conference in Beijing, demonstrating machines performing tasks ranging from automobile manufacturing and parcel sorting to coffee preparation and delicate object handling.
The five-day conference, which ended on August 23, brought together more than 300 exhibitors and featured over 3,000 robotic products, including more than 300 new product launches.
Among the technologies demonstrated were robotic hands capable of handling industrial components, sorting packages and carrying out tasks requiring greater precision and dexterity.
The conference also featured robots designed for food service, healthcare, logistics and other applications, reflecting China’s push to move robotics beyond industrial automation into wider commercial and service sectors.

China FAW, for example, demonstrated robotic systems capable of recognising, grasping and transporting automobile components, tightening bolts and positioning parts. The company said some of the systems had already undergone testing in production environments.
However, industry observers say significant challenges remain before such machines can reliably perform a broad range of tasks outside controlled environments.
Unitree Chief Executive Wang Xingxing said the robotics industry could be approaching what he described as a “ChatGPT moment”, but estimated that major advances in robot software capable of handling unfamiliar real-world environments could still be two to 10 years away.
The demonstrations come as China expands its robotics industry and seeks wider commercial applications for humanoid and other advanced robots.
China’s humanoid robot industry is rapidly expanding, with manufacturers moving from small-scale trials towards wider commercial deployment. Industry data presented around the conference showed Chinese companies accounting for more than 97 per cent of global humanoid robot shipments in the first half of 2026, underscoring the country’s growing dominance in the sector.
The World Robot Conference, held from August 19 to 23, was organised under the theme “Human-Robot Symbiosis, Production-Demand Convergence.”
The event highlighted rapid progress in robotic dexterity and industrial applications, while underscoring the industry’s continuing challenge of making robots reliable, adaptable and economically useful in real-world settings.
