The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM) has congratulated Nigerian-born engineer, Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi, on becoming the first Black woman to earn a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in Robotics from the University of Michigan.
In a statement issued by the Director of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun in Abuja, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of NiDCOM, Dr. Abike Dabiri-Erewa, described the achievement as a remarkable milestone and commended Dosunmu-Ogunbi for her brilliance, resilience and commitment to excellence.
Dabiri-Erewa said the accomplishment is another testament to the exceptional contributions Nigerians in the diaspora continue to make across diverse fields, noting that their successes reinforce the country’s reputation for innovation, hard work and academic excellence.
She noted that “earning the highest academic qualification in the highly specialised field of robotics is not only a personal milestone but also an inspiration to countless young Nigerians, particularly girls and women aspiring to pursue careers in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).”
According to the NiDCOM Chairman, the engineer’s success reflects the Commission’s belief that Nigerians, wherever they reside, continue to distinguish themselves globally while serving as worthy ambassadors of the nation.
Dabiri-Erewa reaffirmed NiDCOM’s commitment to recognising and celebrating outstanding Nigerians in the diaspora “whose achievements continue to elevate the nation’s image on the global stage, while encouraging greater diaspora engagement in national development.”
She urged young Nigerians to draw inspiration from Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s journey by embracing education, innovation and determination as pathways to achieving their dreams.
