The Nigerian Independent System Operator (NISO) has called for stronger collaboration among stakeholders in the Nigerian Electricity Supply Industry (NESI) to improve the stability, reliability and resilience of the national electricity grid.
NISO’s Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer, Abdu Bello Mohammed made the call in his opening remarks at a two-day workshop themed “Strengthening Grid Stability: A Collaborative Workshop for NESI Stakeholders,” held at the Jebba Power Station.
Mohammed said “the power system continues to operate under complex conditions, including generation and transmission constraints, changing demand patterns, frequency excursions and voltage-security challenges.”
He explained that frequency disturbances could result from sudden generation or load losses, inaccurate forecasting and scheduling, faults, inadequate system inertia and the response of generating units during system events.
The NISO boss stressed that maintaining grid stability requires accurate operational information, adequate frequency and voltage control resources, effective reserve management and strict compliance with the Grid Code.
Mohammed also emphasised the need for closer coordination among NISO, the Transmission Company of Nigeria (TCN), Generation Companies (GenCos), Distribution Companies (DisCos), the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), policymakers and other industry stakeholders.
Mohammed said; “system planning would become increasingly important as Nigeria develops new generation projects, transmission infrastructure and other greenfield investments.”
He noted that integrating such projects successfully would require careful assessment of transmission capacity, system strength, operational flexibility, reserve requirements and future electricity demand.
The NISO chief said; “the workshop was expected to produce practical measures, including improved frequency and voltage control, stronger coordination during system disturbances and better alignment between immediate operational needs and long-term grid expansion plans.”
He reaffirmed NISO’s commitment to ensuring a stable, resilient and responsive electricity grid capable of supporting Nigeria’s economic growth and development.
